As of Feb. 16, 2024, LASA High School’s football team will be competing on a “non-honors status”, which means LASA will still have a varsity team but will be playing against not only University Scholastic League (UIL) teams but charter and private schools as well. This means they will also be creating their own match schedule as opposed to UIL making it for them. Following the news, which came as a surprise for LASA students and district 5A competitors like Liberty Hill and McCallum High School, LASA Principal Stacia Crescenzi cited safety concerns as one of the reasons for the sudden change.
Crescenzi said in her Feb. 18 Principal’s Message that because many senior players are graduating from LASA in 2024, the football team will be left primarily composed of sophomores and freshman students who would have to play both offensive and defensive positions. Due to the amount of force and contact often required in football, Crescenzi believed this would put the younger players in danger, adding that the passing of Coach Trey Soto, LASA’s strength and conditioning coach, Special Education teacher, and assistant coach for various sports, meant that football would also lack proper off-season strength and conditioning practice. The decision to change the football program to non-honors would allow these students to build up experience in the meantime, with the hope to come back in the future. The band and dance performances as well as the annual homecoming game will continue as usual.
